Living in Abu Dhabi while employed by a Dubai company requires checking the actual employer, work location, permit and residence arrangement together. The city where you sleep does not by itself determine every employment or immigration responsibility.

Home address and employment administration are different issues

A proposed Abu Dhabi home does not by itself determine which entity employs you or which authority administers the employment-related residence record. Before treating a cross-emirate arrangement as approved, identify the employer, the actual workplace, the work-permit regime and the residence category. This article cannot confirm a universal answer for every mainland, free-zone, government or independently sponsored arrangement.

The practical approach is to confirm the arrangement with the responsible employer and authorities, then assess whether the commute and settlement tasks work. Do not assume that signing an Abu Dhabi lease transfers a Dubai-issued record to ICP, or that a Dubai employer's involvement removes the need to update relevant address information.

Confirm what the job actually requires

Ask whether the role requires attendance at a particular office, client site or regulated premises. A company incorporated in Dubai may have staff working at different locations; a recruitment address may not identify the daily destination. Any remote or hybrid arrangement should be clear enough that you are not choosing a home based on an informal promise.

If residence is independent of the employer, confirm the appropriate employment permission for that role. If the employer supports residence, ask how the proposed living location fits its process and any documentary requirements. A general claim that the job is remote should not be used to bypass employment or business authorisation.

Use the correct immigration channel

The UAE government's verification guidance distinguishes Dubai-issued records, checked through GDRFA Dubai, from those issued through ICP for Abu Dhabi and the other relevant emirates. The authority shown by the record is therefore a better guide than the city where you sleep. Retain the application details and ask the issuing authority about any proposed administrative change.

This matters particularly during a job change. If moving from an Abu Dhabi-supported arrangement to a Dubai entity, obtain a sequence covering the current record, new application and any dependants. Do not cancel first on the assumption that a new employer will resolve every linked deadline later. Changing residence categories involves more than moving belongings between homes.

Check insurance and household services

Ask the insurer and employer whether the policy fits the places where you live, work and expect treatment. Do not infer the network or reimbursement position from the insurer's name alone. A hospital near the new home may not provide the same access as one used under an earlier arrangement.

For housing, confirm the Abu Dhabi tenancy and service requirements directly. A Dubai employment or residence document may form part of the evidence you provide, but it does not automatically answer every landlord, utility or local administrative question. Keep each provider's requirements separate rather than treating the move as one single immigration transaction.

Test the real commuting commitment

Assess the journey to the correct office entrance at your actual start and finish times. Include parking, the walk to the office and likely attendance frequency. A route that seems acceptable once may be tiring when repeated five days a week, while a genuinely occasional journey may justify different housing choices. Do not adopt a fixed travel-time promise from a neighbourhood advertisement.

A household with two workers should evaluate both routines. Add school or nursery trips where relevant and consider what happens when a meeting runs late. Compare dated transport costs and any relevant road charges using current official information. The neighbourhood overview helps identify homes to test, but it cannot determine the practicality of the employment arrangement.

Obtain an answer that fits your case

A hypothetical worker who attends a Dubai office twice weekly and whose family has a confirmed Abu Dhabi school place may find the travel arrangement worth investigating. Someone reporting early every day to a distant site may reach a different conclusion. Neither example establishes immigration eligibility. Document the employment regime, issuing authority, proposed address and work pattern when asking for confirmation. That produces a more reliable answer than a broad statement that everyone can live in one emirate and work in another without further checks.

Clarify the work arrangement

Ask whether you will work at a Dubai office, remotely from home or at a client site. Have the employer confirm the appropriate work authorisation and any free-zone conditions. Do not assume residence in one emirate authorises every cross-emirate business activity.

Check the housing administration

Follow Abu Dhabi's requirements for the home you rent, including the appropriate tenancy-registration and utility processes. Keep address records consistent where an authority or provider requires an update.

Assess the commute

Test the full journey at your expected hours. Include transport, parking and the effect on family routines. If the legal arrangement or worksite is unclear, obtain clarification from the responsible official authority before committing to a home based on an assumed permanent remote arrangement.
