Arriving in Abu Dhabi: Your First 24 Hours

Your first 24 hours should be simple: reach verified accommodation, recover from travel and prepare for the next confirmed appointment.

Your first 24 hours should be simple: reach verified accommodation, recover from travel and prepare for the next confirmed appointment. Trying to complete every residency and housing task on arrival day creates unnecessary mistakes.

Before leaving the airport

Check that your bags and essential documents are present. Use an identifiable transport service and keep your accommodation address available offline. If someone is collecting you for work, verify the person against the employer's pre-arranged contact details.

At the accommodation

Confirm the booking length, checkout time and any deposit conditions. Check internet access and charging arrangements. Let a trusted contact know you arrived. Keep passports and money secure rather than leaving them with an informal helper.

Prepare the next morning

Review the employer's onboarding message and appointment instructions. Set aside the specific documents requested and allow travel time. Buy only immediate essentials until you understand local options. If plans have changed, contact the verified employer or accommodation provider before paying for a replacement arrangement. Keep receipts for costs the employer has agreed to reimburse.

Choose transport for the whole journey

Zayed International Airport publishes separate guidance for official taxis, public buses and prebooked transfers. Official airport taxis operate around the clock and are metered. The airport also lists accessible and larger vehicles. Ask the dispatcher for the vehicle you need rather than accepting an unsolicited lift while tired. Keep the final destination and building entrance available in a screenshot, especially if the accommodation has a similar name to another property.

The airport's bus guidance explains that public buses use a Hafilat card rather than cash on board. Check the current route and last part of the journey before choosing this option with heavy luggage. A route passing through a district does not necessarily stop beside your hotel. Compare the full trip, including a possible connecting taxi, rather than the first fare alone.

If your company booked a transfer, save the driver's meeting point and a separate employer contact. A name board is useful but should match the arrangement already confirmed. A delayed flight is a reason to contact that verified number, not to give your passport to a stranger offering to organise everything.

Deal with baggage issues before leaving

Use the baggage service desk if a checked bag is missing or damaged. Have your baggage tag and flight details ready, obtain the case reference and confirm how delivery updates will reach you. Photograph damage while still at the airport. Ask the airline which receipts it needs if you must buy immediate essentials; reimbursement conditions belong to the airline's policy, not an assumption made at a shop.

Keep any items requiring declaration available for customs inspection. The terminal guide directs passengers with declarable goods to the declaration lane. If you are carrying a medicine whose status you have not resolved, ask the responsible official rather than hiding it among toiletries. Document and prescription preparation should ideally have happened before departure.

Make the first night workable

Confirm that reception will admit you at the actual arrival time. A booking beginning the following afternoon may leave a gap after an early morning flight. Ask in advance whether early access is guaranteed, chargeable or merely subject to availability. Families should also verify the bed configuration rather than infer it from the room category.

Once inside, check the door lock, drinking water, bathroom and air conditioning before unpacking extensively. Locate the exit instructions and reception number. If something essential is unusable, report it immediately and keep the response. Avoid making a separate permanent housing payment because one night of travel has been uncomfortable.

Make a small arrival record

Write down the date of entry, where your official entry or application record can be checked, the accommodation checkout date and the next named contact. Check the authorised period attached to your own entry permission rather than borrowing another traveller's deadline. For employment, an airport arrival and a company collection do not establish that work authorisation is complete.

Charge your phone, enable an affordable communication option and message the person expecting your arrival. Download tomorrow's route while internet is available. Put originals and payment cards somewhere secure, but retain access to documents required at appointments. Keep a separate copy of the hotel address away from your phone.

A realistic next morning

For example, a resident landing late at night might use the next morning for breakfast, an employer call and document organisation, followed by one confirmed appointment. That is more dependable than booking several appointments based on guessed journey times. Keep time available for correcting a booking or recovering delayed luggage. The first month checklist turns those immediate tasks into a longer settling plan.

If an appointment message arrives during the journey, compare the sender and reference with your known application. Do not follow an unexpected payment link simply because it mentions your arrival. Contact the employer or service through its verified channel. Travel fatigue is a good reason to pause an unfamiliar transaction until you can check it properly.
