Read an employment contract by checking identity, work, compensation, conditions and exit terms in that order. First establish which legal entity employs you and which employment regime governs the role.
Check the work and money
Confirm job title, duties, normal location, hours and working pattern. Separate basic salary, fixed allowances and variable compensation. Compare the contract with the offer and ask about any difference before signing.
Read the conditions
Review probation, notice, leave, benefits and any confidentiality or non-compete terms. Ask which handbook provisions form part of the agreement and how changes are notified. Do not leave an important promised benefit outside the written record.
Keep the final version
Check names, dates and signatures, then save the signed document and attachments. Ask the employer to confirm the applicable official contract or permit process. A private contract document alone should not be treated as proof that every work-authorisation requirement has been completed.
Start with the entity and documents
Compare the employing entity's name across the offer, contract and any benefit schedules. A familiar business brand is not necessarily the legal employer. If an agency, subsidiary or outsourced provider appears instead, ask how that arrangement works and which organisation owes the contractual obligations. Identify the actual workplace and the authority responsible for the employment record.
Collect the complete set of documents before reviewing individual clauses. This may include the formal contract, annexes, remuneration schedule and policies incorporated by reference. A short signature page referring to policies you have never seen does not provide enough information for an informed decision. Request the relevant versions and save them with the agreement.
Identify the legal framework first
Federal private-sector employment is governed by its applicable labour legislation and amendments. Government appointments and Abu Dhabi Global Market employment have different frameworks. ADGM's Employment Affairs Office identifies its Employment Regulations 2024 as effective from 1 April 2025. Do not apply a rule merely because someone works geographically in Abu Dhabi.
If you are uncertain, ask which authority issues the work record, which law the contract references and where a dispute would be addressed. An employer's explanation should be consistent with the entity and arrangement. Seek qualified advice where the contract's jurisdiction or wording remains unclear, particularly before a substantial relocation.
Read compensation line by line
Record basic salary, fixed allowances, variable pay and payment frequency separately. Ask whether quoted amounts are monthly or annual and whether an allowance is included in the headline figure. A reimbursement cap should not be counted as guaranteed cash. For commissions or bonuses, review the qualifying conditions, calculation and approval process.
Check benefit rules for eligible family members, start dates and departures. A statement that benefits follow company policy is incomplete until the relevant policy is available. If education fees or housing support are essential to affordability, obtain their written terms before accepting rather than relying on an example discussed during recruitment.
Match duties to daily reality
Review the job description, reporting line, normal location, working pattern and travel expectations. A broad mobility clause may matter if you choose accommodation near one site. Ask what changes the employer anticipates and how they would be documented. Do not assume a remote-work conversation overrides a contract requiring attendance elsewhere.
For a regulated occupation, confirm which professional approvals are conditions of starting and maintaining the role. The contract can describe a job without granting a licence to practise it. Work authorisation and residence arrangements should also be checked separately from the role description.
Read how the relationship changes and ends
Identify probation, notice, renewal, benefit repayment and restrictive provisions. Ordinary federal private-sector notice and probation notice should not be treated as interchangeable. Read the clause in context and verify the relevant official provisions before committing to a departure date with another employer.
For a repayment clause, distinguish an optional relocation advance from costs the employer is legally responsible for. A contract label does not itself determine whether a deduction is lawful. For a non-compete clause, examine the time, location and activities restricted, then obtain advice if it could prevent your intended work.
Make a clarification register
Create three columns: exact wording, practical question and written response. For example, a clause saying annual travel assistance could prompt questions about eligibility, payment timing and whether unused entitlement carries forward. Focused questions are easier to answer than a general request to explain the whole package.
Where a clarification changes an important commitment, ask for the final contract or annex to reflect it. Keep all signed versions and translations. Do not sign blank sections or confirm that money was received when it has not arrived. A careful review should leave you able to explain your work, compensation and exit arrangements in ordinary language.
Use translation to resolve meaning
If a version is in a language you do not fully understand, obtain a reliable explanation before signing. Compare numbers, dates, names and annex references across versions. Ask which version governs under the applicable framework rather than guessing. Translation support should help you understand the commitment; it should not be used to replace or quietly alter the employer's actual document.
