Resigning From a Job in Abu Dhabi: Practical Checklist

Resigning should be a documented process covering notice, handover, settlement and permit arrangements.

Resigning should be a documented process covering notice, handover, settlement and permit arrangements. First identify the employment regime and whether probation or another special circumstance applies.

Before sending notice

Read the contract and current official notice provisions. Calculate a proposed last day and check any new job's start and authorisation requirements. Do not assume leave can automatically replace notice without agreement.

Give a clear written notice

Identify the role, notice date and proposed final working day. Retain proof of delivery and request acknowledgement. Agree handover responsibilities and company-property return without including confidential material in personal files.

Close the arrangement

Request an itemised settlement and verify outstanding wages, leave and applicable benefits. Check work-permit, residence, dependant and insurance consequences separately. If the employer disputes notice or payment, preserve the records and use the responsible official channel. Do not sign an inaccurate receipt merely to accelerate the process without understanding its effect.

Establish which notice rule applies

Identify the legal employer, governing regime and whether you are in probation. Under the ordinary federal private-sector termination provision, written notice is generally agreed within a 30-to-90-day range. Probation and particular termination circumstances have separate rules. Government and ADGM employees should check their applicable framework rather than borrowing that range automatically.

Read your current signed contract and the official termination guidance. If the required period is unclear, clarify it before promising a start date elsewhere. A new employer's preferred joining date does not itself shorten an existing obligation.

Prepare a simple written notice

Use the employer's recognised submission channel and address the appropriate person. State that you are resigning, identify the proposed final working date based on the applicable notice and request acknowledgement. Keep the message factual. You do not need to include a detailed account of every dissatisfaction to create a clear record of resignation.

Save proof of submission and the employer's response. If dates are disputed, ask for a written explanation referring to the contract and applicable rule. Do not assume that a conversation with a manager or an unsent draft establishes when notice began.

Agree changes explicitly

If both parties discuss an earlier release, obtain written confirmation of the final date and financial treatment. Clarify whether duties continue, whether attendance is waived and how notice-related amounts are handled. A verbal instruction to stop attending can create uncertainty if no record explains what was agreed.

Do not assume annual leave can unilaterally replace notice. Ask how outstanding leave and approved absence will be handled. If exceptional circumstances may justify leaving without ordinary notice, obtain advice on the relevant conditions and reporting requirements before acting. Simply labelling a situation serious does not satisfy a legal procedure.

Prepare the handover while access remains available

List current tasks, deadlines, key contacts and matters requiring a decision. Agree a recipient for each responsibility. Transfer business records through approved systems and return equipment with an acknowledgement. Do not remove confidential material or send an entire work mailbox to a personal account.

Keep a separate personal employment file containing records you are entitled to retain, such as your contract, permitted wage evidence and relevant benefit communications. Ask for documents you need while human-resources and payroll contacts remain accessible. This makes later settlement questions easier to explain.

Reconcile money before signing acknowledgements

Request an itemised statement covering wages, approved expenses, applicable leave amounts, end-of-service arrangements and any proposed deductions. Check service dates and pay components against your records. A settlement total is not enough if you cannot see what it includes.

For the relevant federal private-sector framework, official end-of-service guidance identifies a 14-day payment requirement following termination. Confirm the applicable rule and actual termination date. Do not sign that all funds were received merely to complete an operational handover if the statement is not true.

Coordinate permits, residence and insurance

Ask who will complete employment-record cancellation or transfer steps and what evidence you will receive. Residence status, work permission and health cover are separate arrangements. Do not assume that submitting resignation immediately cancels everything or guarantees a fixed period to remain in the UAE.

Check your own immigration position through the relevant authority, especially if family members depend on your sponsorship. Ask the insurer or employer when coverage ends and arrange continuity where needed. A new employer's offer does not itself authorise starting duties before the required process is complete.

A practical departure sequence

A hypothetical employee first verifies the next offer, checks notice, submits written resignation, agrees the final date and prepares a handover. They then reconcile settlement and administrative actions rather than treating acceptance of resignation as proof that every step is finished. The sequence may differ where probation, a dispute or another regime applies.

If disagreement develops, preserve documents and use the responsible official process promptly. Keep communications focused on dates, amounts and obligations. This supports an orderly departure while leaving disputed legal questions to the appropriate advice or authority.
