Can You Work Remotely for a Foreign Company While Living in Abu Dhabi?

You may be able to live in Abu Dhabi while working remotely for an employer outside the UAE through an appropriate residence arrangement. The overseas employment, immigration permission and employer's acceptance of your working location all need to align. A visitor's entry permission or an informal agreement to work from anywhere should not be treated as a complete solution.

Start by distinguishing employment from independent contracting. Someone paid a salary by a foreign company may have a different residence and compliance position from a consultant invoicing that company for projects.

Check the Abu Dhabi remote-work route

ADDED's current Remote Work Visa guidance describes a one-year route for people working remotely for an entity outside the UAE. It states a monthly income requirement of at least USD 3,500 or the equivalent and identifies employment and bank evidence.

ICP's virtual-work visa service also lists proof of remote employment outside the UAE and a salary certificate at that amount. These current pages are more useful for an Abu Dhabi application than an old overseas article describing a different programme.

Treat the published criteria as the start of an assessment, not a guarantee. Check the live application for passport validity, insurance, evidence format and the steps between entry permission and residence issuance. Keep a copy of the current requirements before committing to travel.

Obtain the employer's informed approval

Ask the employer to approve Abu Dhabi as the working location in writing. Explain the proposed period, working hours and whether you expect to travel elsewhere. A general remote-working policy may apply only within the employee's original country.

The employer should review its own employment, payroll, tax and business-presence questions. An employee cannot settle those issues merely by presenting a residence approval. Ask the company which team has authority to approve an international arrangement.

Review security requirements before moving customer information or equipment. Some data or client contracts may restrict access from other countries. Establish whether approved devices, a secure connection or changes to system permissions are needed before your first working day abroad.

Prepare evidence that tells one consistent story

Keep an employment confirmation showing the actual employer, role and remote arrangement. Compare the name with payslips, salary evidence and bank records. Explain genuine differences, such as a parent company paying through a payroll service, instead of assuming the connection is obvious.

ADDED identifies bank statements for the preceding six months as part of its published evidence. Ask the application channel what additional material is needed if pay is variable, recently changed or received in another currency.

Do not alter statements or combine unrelated personal receipts to imitate a salary. If your work is genuinely self-employed, ask about the suitable route rather than forcing the facts into an employee category. Remote residence options need to match the real relationship.

Plan for day-to-day employment practicalities

Agree the normal working schedule, including how meetings will be handled across time zones. Identify which public holidays and leave processes the employer applies. Avoid assuming the employer will adopt local office practices simply because you have moved.

Check equipment insurance, repair arrangements and reimbursement rules. If a laptop fails, establish whether the employer can send a replacement and whether your contract allows personal-device access. Build a practical contingency without bypassing company security controls.

Discuss how your manager will assess availability and output. A clear arrangement can prevent a temporary international move from becoming an unspoken expectation that you remain available through two complete working days.

Keep residence, insurance and household commitments aligned

Record the actual residence validity and renewal evidence required. If employment ends or the arrangement changes materially, contact ICP about the implications rather than assuming status continues on the original basis until expiry.

Check health-insurance acceptance for Abu Dhabi and any family members. An overseas employee benefit might provide travel assistance without satisfying local resident requirements or covering routine treatment at a useful provider network.

Use conservative housing and schooling commitments while approvals remain uncertain. Include application, insurance, identity and relocation expenses in the budget, but obtain current quotes rather than treating a visa-service fee as the complete cost of moving.

Reassess before adding independent customers

Remote employment permission should not be interpreted as a blanket approval to provide separate services to local customers. If you want to freelance alongside the job, check economic licensing, any work permission and the employer's conflict rules before accepting assignments.

Likewise, a change from salary to contractor invoices is substantive. Ask whether the existing residence basis, tax treatment and banking profile remain appropriate. A new contract title does not automatically resolve those questions.

A sustainable arrangement has evidence of the qualifying overseas employment, the correct residence approval and an employer that understands where the work occurs. Keep those elements under review so a change in job circumstances can be addressed before it disrupts your ability to remain and work lawfully.
