Teaching in Abu Dhabi requires more than a school's willingness to hire you. Establish the qualification, professional licensing and appointment requirements for the specific school role. ADEK's school-staff eligibility rules and the applicable federal education-professional framework should be checked together, rather than assuming one certificate settles the entire process.
Define the proposed teaching position
Ask the school to identify the role, subject, pupil age range, curriculum and employing entity. A classroom teacher, subject teacher, inclusion specialist and school leader can have different eligibility profiles. “Teacher” on a recruitment advertisement may not capture the position used in the approval application.
ADEK is the relevant Abu Dhabi education authority for the schools within its policy scope. Its School Staff Eligibility Policy sets out role-based profiles and alternative pathways. Read the section for the proposed position instead of taking a minimum requirement from a different category.
Government-school employment and other educational settings may involve different authorities or arrangements. Confirm the school's actual status. An overseas recruitment agency's general UAE checklist should not be treated as the final authority for every Abu Dhabi education job.
Match qualifications to the role
Prepare the academic award, transcript, teacher-training qualification and evidence of any overseas professional status. The transcript can matter because it identifies the subject studied, not merely the broad degree title. Ask the school which evidence it needs to demonstrate your fit with the relevant eligibility profile.
An academic degree and a teaching qualification perform different functions. A short course about classroom practice should not automatically be presented as a recognised teacher-preparation qualification. Likewise, a subject degree alone does not establish that every teaching role's professional preparation requirements have been met.
Where your route is unusual, describe it accurately. A postgraduate teaching programme, alternative preparation pathway or change of subject should be supported by the actual award and course information. Let the school and responsible authority assess the evidence instead of inventing an equivalent title for your CV.
Check the professional licence and appointment process
The UAE Government's teaching-qualification guidance identifies professional licensing as part of lawful teaching. Ask the school which current licence or registration applies to the proposed role and how it interacts with local appointment approval. A school's internal offer letter is not the same document.
Find out who initiates each stage, which steps need your direct participation and whether any assessment remains outstanding. Keep the application reference and the name of the relevant authority. Do not describe yourself as fully approved while an employer is still checking eligibility or submitting documents.
An overseas teaching licence can be valuable evidence of your professional history. It should not be advertised as an automatic substitute for every UAE requirement. Any recognition, exemption or transition arrangement should come from the applicable current rules, not a colleague's recruitment experience from an earlier year.
Prepare employment and safeguarding evidence
Maintain a chronological record of school employment, responsibilities and dates. Explain gaps and distinguish qualified teaching from assistant, volunteer or tutoring work. References should come from appropriate contacts who can verify the role you performed.
Ask what safeguarding, conduct, identity and background records are required for the appointment. Obtain these through the stated official channels and check their applicable validity. Do not assume a certificate prepared for another country or employer will meet a new requirement without confirmation.
Keep personal records secure. Send sensitive documents only through the school's verified recruitment channel or the relevant official service. Confirm unexpected requests independently, particularly if someone asks for payment to a personal account or claims that approval can be bought without assessment.
Separate document authentication from teaching eligibility
A school may request authenticated academic records. Foreign Affairs attestation verifies document signatures and seals; academic recognition and teaching approval address other questions. Ask which documents need which process before arranging translation, courier collection or a paid service.
Use the current requirements for the issuing country and document type. Digital attestation arrangements vary, and the word digital does not necessarily mean the original paper certificate is never needed. Retain a complete master copy and the final authenticated version.
See certificate attestation for employment for a practical way to organise the evidence. Good administration reduces avoidable delay, but it does not turn an unsuitable qualification into a suitable one.
Plan for professional development after appointment
Ask about induction, observation, curriculum training and any ongoing professional learning required by the school or authority. Select training that addresses actual classroom needs, such as assessment practice, inclusion or the subject you teach, rather than collecting unrelated attendance certificates.
Keep an evidence file showing completed learning, feedback and changes to your teaching. Where a course claims official credit or recognition, verify that claim with the body concerned. School participation, professional development credit and formal qualification recognition are different outcomes.
Before accepting a start date, obtain a clear account of the remaining conditions. If approval is pending, ask how that affects relocation, duties and the contract. A realistic plan respects both the school's recruitment needs and the professional requirements that must be satisfied before you take responsibility for pupils.
