Living in Abu Dhabi / Practical guide

Moving to Abu Dhabi From the UK

Moving from the UK to Abu Dhabi requires two parallel plans: establishing your UAE life and resolving the responsibilities you leave behind.

Moving from the UK to Abu Dhabi requires two parallel plans: establishing your UAE life and resolving the responsibilities you leave behind. Neither an employment offer nor a UAE residence record settles UK tax, pension or property questions.

Close UK arrangements deliberately

List your tenancy or mortgage commitments, council and utility accounts, insurance policies, banking access and any continuing income. Check official UK guidance or obtain qualified advice on tax residence and reporting rather than assuming departure ends all obligations. Keep access to accounts that use a UK telephone number for authentication until you have changed their settings.

Prepare the arrival package

Ask the employer whether flights, temporary accommodation and document processing are included. Obtain the required form of education or family documents from the receiving authority before ordering attestations. Compare shipping a household with replacing bulky items after arrival.

Review the family calendar

Coordinate school records, notice periods and travel dates. A UK school year and an Abu Dhabi school's admissions schedule may not align with your preferred move. Keep a written fallback for delayed accommodation or school places instead of relying on an assumed start date.

Establish which UK decisions need advice

The UK government's living abroad guidance directs movers to check tax, National Insurance, pensions and benefits according to their circumstances. A UAE salary and physical departure from Britain do not establish the date on which every UK obligation ends. If you retain a rented property, business interest or regular UK work, ask a qualified adviser what records and reporting you need.

Create a departure record containing travel dates, employment dates, property arrangements and continuing income. This is useful factual evidence for an adviser; it is not a substitute for determining residence under the applicable rules. Ask HMRC which departure notification or return applies rather than assuming one form suits everyone.

Notify relevant account providers and insurers of the actual change of circumstances. A policy written for a UK resident may not provide the protection you expect after relocation. Check stored belongings, a temporarily empty home and any vehicle separately. Retain a reliable correspondence address without representing it as your residence where it is not.

Replace assumptions about healthcare

The UK government's UAE living guidance states that there is no reciprocal healthcare agreement between the UK and the UAE. Obtain the employee policy wording and start date, then check any family policy separately. A statement that insurance is provided does not explain the hospital network, outpatient cover, exclusions or how claims are authorised.

Ask how a gap between departure and local cover will be handled. Discuss ongoing treatment with your clinician and insurer before moving. Obtain a medical summary and current prescription information. UAE medicine controls are separate from UK prescribing practice, so check the relevant import requirements before packing a supply.

For children, carry vaccination and relevant medical records in a format the school or healthcare provider can use. Do not assume a UK prescription will automatically be dispensed locally without a new clinical assessment. Keep the first appointment and medicine continuity plan outside the shipment timetable.

Coordinate the UK handover with the UAE arrival

A UK lease ending on a fixed date and an Abu Dhabi apartment available later can create two accommodation bills. Place the actual dates on one calendar. Include storage, temporary housing and any refundable deposits whose return may occur after a new payment is due. Avoid treating money still held by a UK landlord as available arrival cash.

Compare shipping only after confirming what the UAE home includes. If you choose furnished temporary accommodation, large furniture may need storage at destination. Ask movers for the same inventory and delivery scope, including customs handling and possible storage. Keep documents and irreplaceable essentials in your personal luggage.

Make the household decision realistic

For a family, check the particular school's admission requirements and academic calendar. The availability of a familiar curriculum does not establish an available place or an identical transfer point. Ask about transport from the actual housing shortlist and when fees become payable. Arrange a fallback if one child cannot start on your preferred date.

For an individual move, protect time for a practical first week rather than assuming everything will follow the UK administrative sequence. Banking, housing and official records have their own dependencies. The first month checklist can hold those tasks alongside your UK closure list. Review both after arrival so outstanding responsibilities do not remain hidden in separate email accounts.

Review anything linked to a UK address shortly before departure, including driving documents, professional subscriptions and correspondence for retained property. Ask each organisation what details should be updated and keep its confirmation. Cancel a service only after checking whether it supports authentication or a necessary transitional task. A simple list of accounts, contact changes and closure dates reduces the chance of losing access while trying to tidy everything up at once.

Check whether any documents or devices will be needed to complete remaining UK tasks remotely. For example, a provider may require its existing security device or a reference from the latest statement. Keep those essentials with your personal luggage rather than placing them in storage you cannot access during the opening weeks.
