What to Know Before Moving to Abu Dhabi

Before moving to Abu Dhabi, understand your work location, housing options and household obligations together.

Before moving to Abu Dhabi, understand your work location, housing options and household obligations together. An attractive salary can feel very different when accommodation, school transport and dependant insurance are excluded from the package.

Questions to settle before departure

Ask the employer where you will normally work, whether that location can change and which benefits are written into the contract. Ask how accommodation is handled during onboarding. For family moves, confirm whether benefits apply to dependants or only to the employee.

Test everyday logistics

Compare two potential neighbourhoods using the same commute, school and shopping requirements. Look at the walk from the building entrance to transport, not just the distance on a map. Allow for summer conditions when judging whether walking is practical.

Keep decisions reversible

Use a short initial stay to test assumptions. Avoid paying a rental deposit solely on photographs, and verify the recipient before transferring funds. Keep an exit reserve for an unsuccessful probation period or a family decision to postpone the move. These are planning precautions, not predictions about what your experience will be.

Know which rules belong to which decision

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security handles relevant entry and residence services for Abu Dhabi. Employment permissions depend on the employing entity and applicable regime. Housing administration depends on the property's location and registration framework. A general statement that the employer handles the visa should lead to a specific question about who does what and when.

Use official channels to check the current route before paying for optional assistance. Keep a copy of the actual permission and its dates. A visitor's entry status does not authorise work, and an application acknowledgement is not an issued residence record. These distinctions matter more than memorising a universal sequence that may not fit your category.

Understand the difference between salary and available cash

Ask whether the quoted salary already includes allowances and how each benefit is delivered. Check the first payroll date, reimbursement conditions and whether initial accommodation has a fixed end date. If an employer pays a benefit later, you may still need cash to bridge the initial purchase.

Housing can involve a payment schedule very different from a monthly household budget. Obtain the landlord's actual proposed instalments, deposits and itemised fees before deciding affordability. Keep a separate line for cooling, electricity, water, internet and transport where not included. Use current quotations instead of a claim that all expatriates spend a particular amount.

Understand the real housing product

An advertised furnished apartment may include furniture without kitchenware, bed linen or internet. An unfurnished home may or may not contain major appliances. Ask for an inventory and inspect condition before payment. If staying temporarily, ask which bills, housekeeping and booking charges are included and how an extension is priced.

Ask how the tenancy will be registered and whether the property is within the relevant ordinary Abu Dhabi or ADGM process. Al Maryah and Al Reem Islands are covered by ADGM's real estate jurisdiction. Do not import Dubai's Ejari procedure into an Abu Dhabi housing plan. The renting overview explains how to compare the property, contract and cash together.

Check continuity of healthcare and education

Read the insurance policy rather than relying on an employment benefit summary. Confirm covered people, commencement dates and the provider network. If you need ongoing treatment, arrange a medical summary and discuss the transition with a clinician. Check medicine import requirements by the actual product and ingredient before departure.

Families should confirm admission arrangements with the particular school. Curriculum availability does not establish a place for a specific child or a suitable transport route from the intended home. Ask about the year group, records, costs and refund conditions. A staged move may help resolve housing and admission, but it also requires funding and care support in two places.

Keep home country obligations visible

Prepare an account closure and continuity list for banking, insurance, housing, tax and subscriptions. Ask the relevant authorities or advisers which reporting duties continue after departure. Citizenship, income sources and individual residence rules matter. Do not assume that UAE residence automatically removes every home country obligation.

Keep a working telephone and secure account access while changing contact details. Give a trusted person only the authority they actually need to help with remaining tasks. Avoid sharing login credentials as a shortcut. Carry originals required soon after arrival and retain a protected backup accessible if the main device is lost.

Make the first decision modest

You do not need to buy a car, furnish a full apartment and settle every long term question during the first week. Book a manageable arrival, establish the actual work pattern and test a few housing options. Review what you learn against the original assumptions. A small reversible decision can buy enough time to make a much better permanent one.

Check whether an initial employer accommodation arrangement lets you receive mail or deliveries and whether you must leave immediately if the work plan changes. Those terms affect both the opening budget and the backup plan. A benefit has practical value when its duration and access conditions are known, rather than merely listed in a recruitment conversation.
