Pack for the period before your shipment and permanent housing are available. Your first suitcase should support work, appointments and everyday living without relying on a delayed delivery.

Carry essentials with you

Keep original identity and application documents, chargers, essential clothing and important contact details in hand luggage. For medicines, check current official UAE import rules and any approval requirements before travel. Do not assume a medicine sold freely at home has the same status in the UAE.

Ship selectively

Compare an item's replacement price with shipping, storage and eventual disposal costs. Check appliance electrical specifications and whether a warranty is useful locally. Bulky low-value furniture can cost more to move than it is worth, particularly when the final apartment size is still unknown.

Leave room for the actual home

Bring enough workwear for your immediate role and comfortable everyday clothing. Avoid buying a full household package before seeing storage space, appliances and furnishings already included. Keep an inventory and photographs for shipped valuables. Pack a small arrival kit so you can manage the first night without opening every bag.

Pack by access date rather than room

Make three groups: items required in transit, items needed before freight arrives and items worth shipping for the permanent home. A document can be inexpensive to carry but costly to replace; a large kitchen appliance can have the opposite profile. The useful measure is how soon the item is needed and how difficult it would be to obtain a suitable replacement.

Hand luggage should contain the originals required soon after arrival, a protected document backup, essential chargers, arrival details and a change of clothing. Follow the carrier's cabin baggage and battery rules for the specific flight. Do not assume that a rule used on a previous airline applies unchanged. Keep valuables and irreplaceable records away from a consignment that may be delayed.

Check medicines before closing the bag

The UAE government's medicines guidance distinguishes ordinary prescribed medicines from controlled categories and directs travellers to the relevant import permission service. Check the medicine by active ingredient, not only the brand name. Keep the prescription and any required report or approval with the supply. A medicine bought legally at home is not automatically unrestricted at the UAE border.

Retain original labelled packaging so the product and patient information can be identified. Ask your clinician about treatment continuity and the documents a new clinician will need. Do not split a supply into unlabelled containers to save space. Where status is unclear, obtain an answer through the responsible UAE service before departure rather than relying on a packing list written by a retailer.

Choose clothing for work and ordinary life

Pack enough familiar work clothing for initial meetings and appointments, then add comfortable clothes for your actual routine. Ask the employer about uniform provision or specific site requirements before buying specialist items. Include a light layer for indoor settings and footwear suitable for the journeys you expect to make. A new wardrobe need not be bought before you understand the local work pattern.

For children, prioritise familiar essentials, a few favourite belongings and anything needed for the first school days. Confirm school uniform arrangements directly rather than guessing from photographs. Pack a small activity kit for the journey and temporary accommodation. Keep each child's immediate clothing accessible without opening every suitcase.

Check electronics and large appliances individually

Read the equipment rating label and manufacturer instructions. A plug adaptor does not establish voltage compatibility. For a device that supports the local supply, check the required plug and charging arrangement. For an item that does not, compare safe conversion, warranty implications and replacement cost before carrying it.

Bring a short list of serial numbers for valuable equipment and retain purchase records where relevant. Remove sensitive data from devices being sold or left in storage before departure. Protect backed up files separately from the laptop travelling with you. The aim is to avoid both physical loss and losing access to essential documents if a device fails.

Reduce duplicate household purchases

Ask the temporary accommodation provider what is supplied, including towels, cooking equipment, laundry facilities and bedding. A furnished long tenancy may still exclude kitchenware or small appliances. Pack a short bridge supply based on confirmed inclusions rather than assuming furnished means fully equipped.

Leave bulky nonessential items until a permanent home has been inspected and measured. Compare freight, insurance, storage and delivery access with replacement cost. If shipping, label boxes by contents and priority, and keep a detailed inventory. The household shipping guide explains how customs and destination handling affect that choice. Review the final suitcase against your arrival plan, not against the idea that an entire existing home must travel at once.

Weigh the completed bags against the allowance actually purchased and photograph the contents of checked luggage for your own record. Keep airline baggage tags until everything is received. Split immediate essentials sensibly between travellers where practical, without separating anyone from their own medicines or identity documents. One delayed suitcase should not leave the whole household without clothes for the first morning.
