An Abu Dhabi driver needs appropriate motor insurance for the vehicle and intended use, alongside valid driving entitlement and registration. Read the policy schedule and conditions before choosing a premium, because legal registration requirements and protection against your own financial loss are different questions.

Start with the regulatory framework

Motor insurance is part of the vehicle registration process described by the UAE Government. The Central Bank of the UAE publishes the unified motor policy framework, including third-party liability and loss-and-damage policies. Abu Dhabi Mobility administers the local registration service, but it does not determine every individual insurance claim.

Use an authorised insurer or properly identifiable intermediary and confirm who actually underwrites the cover. Keep the quotation, policy schedule, terms and payment receipt. A broker's message saying that insurance is arranged is less useful than documents showing the correct vehicle, insured person, period and scope.

Distinguish liability from own-damage cover

Third-party liability concerns covered harm caused to others. It should not be assumed to pay for damage to your own car. Loss-and-damage protection addresses the insured vehicle within its terms. A package described as comprehensive still needs to be read for exclusions, conditions and endorsements.

Consider what you could afford after an accident, theft or other loss. The purchase price of an older car does not remove the possibility of a substantial liability to someone else. Equally, satisfying the basic registration requirement may leave the owner bearing the cost of replacing their own vehicle. Compare protection before comparing the final premium.

Check the vehicle and period carefully

Inspect the chassis number, make, model, registration details and insured value. A typing error can create an avoidable dispute or stop an electronic registration transaction. Confirm the start date and time before collecting a car, particularly when ownership is changing or an older policy is being cancelled.

Coordinate insurance and registration dates without assuming one automatically extends the other. A policy's treatment of a particular expiry situation is not permission to drive with an expired licence or registration. Vehicle registration explains why those records should be checked separately.

Confirm drivers and the intended use

Tell the insurer who is expected to drive, including younger or newly licensed family members where relevant. Ask about the licence class, experience conditions and any additional excess. Do not assume that a valid licence alone guarantees that every proposed use is covered by every policy.

Explain whether the car is privately used, used for business travel or intended for any paid transport activity. A private policy should not be treated as approval to undertake a regulated commercial activity. Obtain a written response if a use is unusual. The insurer's answer should identify the actual circumstances rather than offer a broad slogan about full coverage.

Compare repair and settlement terms

Ask whether the policy provides agency repair or another repair arrangement and how that applies to the car's age. Check the excess, parts treatment and procedure for assessing major damage or total loss. A sales illustration should be consistent with the contract rather than replace it.

Consider optional benefits individually: roadside assistance, replacement transport, personal accident cover or cross-border extensions may have limits or separate conditions. Do not infer that a benefit shown on a comparison site's summary is included in the issued policy. Save the final schedule and endorsements after purchase, not only the original quotation.

Read exclusions before an incident

Review the wording for excluded events, unauthorised use and duties after a loss. Flood or weather damage, off-road activity, modifications and geographic limits deserve specific questions where relevant. The answer can differ between policy types and endorsements; avoid broad assumptions based on the word comprehensive.

Disclose relevant information accurately when applying. If you modify the car or materially change its use, ask whether the insurer must be informed before continuing. A vehicle inspection, registration approval or a friend's successful claim does not establish that your different event will be accepted under your contract.

Know the claims process in advance

Keep the insurer's official reporting route available. After a collision, address safety and the appropriate accident report, then notify the insurer according to its conditions. Provide accurate facts and retain the report reference, photographs taken safely and correspondence. Do not authorise major repairs on an assumption that every expense will be reimbursed.

Ask which workshop or assessment process is authorised and whether towing or storage needs approval. Keep an itemised record of expenses and decisions. What to do after a road accident separates emergency action from the subsequent administrative and insurance work.

Handle renewal, sale and disagreements carefully

Before renewal, compare the new terms with the previous policy rather than looking only at the price. Confirm continuing driver and use information. When selling, ask how the policy ends and whether a certificate or other evidence is required for any refund request. Do not promise the buyer that your insurance transfers automatically.

If a claim or premium issue remains unresolved, use the insurer's formal complaints process and then check the current authorised escalation route for eligibility. Retain the decision and policy documents. This guidance was last verified on 20 October 2026 and does not promise acceptance of an individual claim.
