Apply for a new Abu Dhabi driving licence by confirming your eligibility, using the correct traffic record, completing the required medical and training stages, passing the assessments and obtaining the issued licence. Begin with the current Abu Dhabi Mobility service through TAMM rather than a training advertisement.
Choose the application route first
Explain whether this is your first licence anywhere, whether you already hold a foreign entitlement or whether you need a new vehicle category. An eligible exchange can differ substantially from a first-time learning application. Do not purchase a full training package until you know which route the authority accepts for your circumstances.
The federal traffic law and Abu Dhabi licensing process operate together. The 2024 law sets a minimum age baseline of seventeen, while some government car-service summaries still state eighteen. Ask the live licensing service to confirm the applicable age and class requirements rather than assuming a general announcement guarantees immediate admission to every course or test.
Check your identity and traffic file
Abu Dhabi Mobility describes digital access through TAMM using UAE Pass and an active traffic file. Review existing records before opening another application. A person who previously held a UAE licence or owned a vehicle may already have relevant information in the traffic system.
Ensure names and identifying details match the documents you will submit. Update a phone number through the proper service if you no longer control it. Authentication codes should come to you, not to an unknown agent. If linked records disagree, ask how to correct the underlying information instead of repeatedly uploading the same document.
Complete accepted medical or eyesight checks
Use the examination provider and process accepted for the licensing transaction. Ask whether the result is transmitted electronically and how to confirm that it has reached the right traffic file. Keep the receipt and any reference if the information does not appear when expected.
Discuss any condition that could affect driving accurately. Do not conceal a relevant restriction because you fear a delay, and do not assume that an ordinary optical prescription is the required licensing evidence. If glasses or another correction are needed, understand the licence conditions and use the appropriate correction during training and assessments.
Select an approved training provider
Ask for a written explanation of the stages your route requires. This should distinguish instruction, internal assessments, authority tests, booking charges and circumstances in which further lessons may be needed. A package price is difficult to compare if one provider includes a stage that another charges separately.
Look at practical availability as well as the headline cost. Check lesson location, language, transport arrangements and how cancellations work. A low advertised figure can be poor value if it creates an unmanageable commute or excludes essential stages. No reputable provider can guarantee that an authority will pass an applicant regardless of performance.
Learn for independent driving
Use lessons to build observation, speed selection, controlled manoeuvring and awareness of other road users. Ask the instructor to explain errors in terms of the risk they create. Memorising a sequence for one junction is less useful than understanding how to judge similar junctions safely.
Practise only within the legal learning arrangement. A family member's private car and an empty road do not automatically provide permission to practise. Confirm the training permit, instructor and vehicle requirements. Driving test requirements explains how to prepare for the assessment without relying on supposed secret shortcuts.
Book assessments with realistic time margins
Follow the provider's and authority's instructions for the theory and practical stages required by your route. Check appointment details, identity documents, learning-permit validity and any prerequisites. Save confirmation in a place you can access even if mobile reception is poor.
If you cannot attend, use the authorised rescheduling process and check any consequences before the appointment passes. Do not assume that telling an instructor informally changes the official booking. After an unsuccessful attempt, request the result and appropriate improvement plan. Additional training should address the weaknesses identified rather than simply repeat the same route.
Complete issuance after passing
A test result is not the same as an issued driving licence. Check whether another application, payment or approval is needed to complete the process. Do not drive independently while relying only on a pass notification or a training certificate.
Inspect the issued record for the correct identity, category, expiry and restrictions. Ask how the digital record is accessed and whether a physical document is needed for your intended use. Resolve discrepancies before borrowing or collecting a vehicle. Keep the final service receipt so you can distinguish successful issuance from an application still awaiting action.
Prepare the first regular journey
Confirm that the car is registered and insured for the intended driver and use. Set up a familiar route with enough time for parking, rather than beginning with an urgent motorway journey. Check mirrors and controls while stationary and prepare navigation before setting off.
Record the licence expiry and the authority's current renewal route. If employment depends on driving, provide the employer with accurate evidence of the issued category, not a promise based on a future test date. This guidance was last verified on 20 October 2026; exact stages, fees and availability should be checked in the current Abu Dhabi service.
