Renew an Abu Dhabi driving licence through the current Abu Dhabi Mobility service on TAMM, after checking your traffic record and completing the requirements shown for your case. Begin before expiry so an eyesight result, identity mismatch or restriction can be resolved without interrupting lawful driving.
Check the correct record and renewal service
Confirm the licence number, vehicle categories, expiry and any restriction. A lost document, a new category and an expired licence are not necessarily the same transaction. Select the service that matches the issue rather than assuming that ordering another card renews the underlying entitlement.
Abu Dhabi Mobility lists licence renewal among its driver services and directs customers to TAMM using UAE Pass and an active traffic file. An old article directing every applicant to a particular police counter may no longer describe the current service route. Follow the official link and obtain assistance through the authority if your record is not displayed correctly.
Review identity and contact information
Compare the details in the traffic record with your current identity documents. A renewed passport or changed mobile number can leave older information attached to an account. Correct the underlying record through the accepted procedure instead of creating another profile to work around a mismatch.
Ensure you can receive relevant messages yourself. Never give another person a UAE Pass approval or verification code without understanding the transaction it authorises. If someone is helping with documents, ask them to explain the service while you retain control of authentication. Save application references in your own records.
Complete the accepted eyesight requirement
Check whether a new examination is needed and which providers are approved for this renewal. Ask how the result reaches the traffic system and which identity or traffic-file details must be supplied. Keep a receipt in case the result is not visible when you apply.
Tell the examiner about the correction you use for driving. If glasses or contact lenses are required, understand the resulting conditions. Do not interpret a routine optician visit or an older prescription as automatically satisfying the renewal service. A person with a relevant medical condition may need clarification beyond a basic eyesight result.
Resolve fines and restrictions properly
The UAE Government's renewal guidance states that traffic fines must be settled. Inspect the current record to identify what needs payment and whether any item requires a separate action. Some matters can involve traffic points, a restriction or an unresolved administrative requirement rather than a simple card payment.
Do not assume that clearing a balance removes every driving restriction. Where the service shows an obstacle you do not understand, obtain an explanation and a reference before repeating payment attempts. Checking and paying traffic fines explains how to review the notice and protect payment evidence.
Review the application before submitting
Check the renewal category, displayed fees, delivery or document options and any declarations. The amount shown for your transaction is more relevant than a fee quoted in an old blog or for another emirate. An additional delivery or examination charge should be identified separately from the licensing fee.
Submit through the official service and keep the payment receipt. If the page closes unexpectedly, check the application and banking status before starting again. A charge on a card is evidence of a payment attempt, not proof that the licence has been renewed. Contact the authority when payment and service status appear inconsistent.
Inspect the renewed licence
Verify the new expiry, categories, personal details and restrictions. The renewed validity depends on the applicable category and applicant circumstances, so use the issued record rather than assuming the term from a friend's renewal. Ask promptly about any discrepancy.
Check access to the accepted digital document and any physical copy you requested. If you need to hire a car overseas, the destination and rental company may have separate document requirements. A UAE digital record should not be assumed to replace every document required abroad. Keep appropriate evidence without sharing unnecessary identity details through unsecured messages.
If the licence has already expired
Do not treat a possible late-renewal procedure or an insurance provision as permission to continue driving. Arrange alternative transport while the entitlement is unresolved. Ask the licensing authority which requirements apply after the period of expiry and whether further assessment or evidence is needed.
An insurer's contractual response to an accident is also separate from the traffic offence question. A policy clause should never be used as a plan to drive on an expired document. If employment requires driving, notify the responsible person accurately and explain the expected service steps without promising an approval date the authority has not given.
Keep other vehicle records separate
Licence renewal does not renew registration or motor insurance. Check those dates before your next journey, especially when several household vehicles or company drivers are involved. Make sure the vehicle remains covered for the renewed licence holder and intended use.
After completion, retain the receipt, renewed record and a reminder well before the next expiry. Review employer or rental records that held the old copy. This guidance was last verified on 20 October 2026 and identifies the Abu Dhabi process; current TAMM requirements determine your individual renewal transaction.
