Annual Leave Entitlements for Employees in Abu Dhabi

Under the federal private-sector guidance, a worker completing one year of service is entitled to 30 days of paid annual leave.

Employees covered by the UAE federal private-sector Labour Law receive 30 days of fully paid annual leave after completing one year of service. Where service exceeds six months but remains below one year, the entitlement is two days for each month of service. The calculation changes for part-time arrangements, and Abu Dhabi government employment and ADGM employment have separate frameworks.

The useful question is therefore not simply how many days Abu Dhabi employees receive. Establish which law governs your job, which service period payroll has used, and whether your contract grants a better benefit. The UAE Government annual-leave guidance explains the federal starting point.

Establish your entitlement and leave year

Ask HR for your employment commencement date, annual allowance, accrued balance and the dates of the leave year. A balance displayed in an HR application may include leave available in advance, rather than leave already earned. That distinction matters when joining or leaving partway through a year.

For federal private-sector employment, the statutory 30-day allowance is expressed in days, rather than 30 working days. Public holidays and agreed rest days falling within the annual-leave period are generally included unless the contract or policy gives a more favourable arrangement. Do not compare that allowance directly with an employer advertising 22 working days without comparing the actual calendar and policy.

Part-time entitlement is linked to actual working hours under the implementing rules. Obtain the employer's written calculation instead of dividing the full-time allowance by the number of days you happen to attend in a particular week. Variable schedules need a consistent reference period.

Agree dates before purchasing travel

An employee's right to leave does not mean every proposed date must be accepted. Work requirements and coordination with other employees affect scheduling. The official guidance says the employer may set leave dates in agreement with the employee and must give at least one month's notice of those dates.

Send a request specifying the first day away, last day away and intended return to work. Check whether a weekend immediately before or after the requested period is included under the organisation's recording method. Obtain approval through the recognised system, particularly if a manager has only agreed verbally.

A practical request might explain that you need ten days for a family visit, can complete a handover before departure and have identified cover for urgent responsibilities. This helps resolve scheduling without implying you must give up the underlying entitlement. If the request is refused, ask for alternative dates and a record of the remaining balance.

Understand pay during leave and cash on departure

Paid annual leave and compensation for unused leave are different calculations. Ordinary annual leave is paid leave. When federal private-sector employment ends with an unused entitlement, the official guidance explains that the cash calculation uses basic salary, including the proportion due for part of the final year.

Request a statement showing the opening balance, accrual, days taken, authorised carryover and balance payable. If the figure changes between the HR application and final settlement, ask which entries explain the difference. A calculation cannot be checked from the final cash amount alone.

For illustration, two employees can have identical total monthly salaries but different basic salaries and allowances. Their unused-leave payments may therefore differ even where the recorded unused balance is the same. This is a reason to inspect the wage components in the contract, rather than assume a payroll mistake or use a total-salary calculator unquestioningly.

Carryover needs a documented decision

Unused days should not disappear simply because a supervisor was too busy to approve leave. The federal guidance describes carryover with employer consent and rules governing compensation. It also says the employer may not prevent an employee from using accrued leave for more than two consecutive years, subject to the employee's choice to carry it forward or receive compensation under the applicable rules.

Before year-end, identify how many days remain and ask how they will be used or treated. Keep rejected requests where work demands prevented absence. Do not assume that an internal deadline overrides statutory rights, or that every unused day can automatically be carried indefinitely. Resolve the particular balance with reference to the law, implementing regulation and policy.

ADGM and government employees

ADGM's Employment Regulations 2024 took effect on 1 April 2025. The Employment Affairs Office describes a minimum of 20 working days of vacation leave per leave year, excluding national holidays, and first-year accrual at one twelfth of the annual allowance per month. Its carryover and termination-payment provisions differ from the federal model. Use the ADGM Employment Affairs Office resources for an ADGM contract.

Abu Dhabi local government employees should check the current government human-resources legislation and their entity's implementing arrangements. Federal government employees use a different federal HR framework. Domestic workers also have separate legislation. The employer's legal identity matters more than an office's address or a job title.

Resolve a disputed balance with evidence

Start with a short written query to payroll identifying the contested dates or arithmetic. Attach approvals and payslips relevant to the discrepancy. Ask for a corrected ledger, a reasoned explanation or a practical leave schedule, depending on the issue.

If the employer maintains a calculation that appears inconsistent with the applicable entitlement, seek guidance from the correct employment authority. Keep an independent copy of your records before access to the HR portal ends. Avoid signing a settlement stating that all leave payments have been received when that is not accurate; ask for the disputed amount to be identified and handled properly.
