Changing employers in Abu Dhabi requires a coordinated review of employment permission, residence and any family permits linked to your sponsorship. A new contract does not by itself transfer an existing immigration record. The correct sequence depends on whether your residence is employer-sponsored, family-sponsored or independent, and which employment authority regulates the new job.
Organise the transition before the final working day. This gives you time to correct documents, agree responsibilities and identify the period during which you must obtain a new status or depart. Do not assume the notice period and immigration grace period run from the same event.
Identify both employment systems
Ask the current and future employers to confirm their legal entities and responsible authorities. An employer registered with the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation follows that system's work-permit procedures. A free-zone employer or Abu Dhabi Global Market arrangement may involve a different employment process.
Moving between systems can require more coordination than changing two employers within the same framework. The word transfer may describe the intended result without explaining the actual cancellation, application and immigration steps.
Keep the current contract, work-permit information, residence record and signed new offer. Compare the proposed job title, employer name and start date so you can spot discrepancies before applications are submitted.
Determine whether residence must change
If the existing employer sponsors your residence, ask how and when cancellation or another authorised change will occur. Request the issued cancellation confirmation and check the resulting deadline. A future date on an old residence PDF does not override a completed cancellation.
If you hold family-sponsored or independent residence, a new work-permit arrangement may be needed without replacing the residence basis. Obtain confirmation instead of cancelling a valid permit unnecessarily. Golden or Green Residence should not be treated as a reason to ignore employment approval.
The guide to residence and work authorisation explains why those permissions must be assessed separately.
Plan dependant permits before your own cancellation
If you sponsor relatives, review their position early. ICP's cancellation service states that family permits must be cancelled before the worker's residence cancellation, or placed on hold for a limited period under the applicable conditions.
The hold arrangement is not automatic. ICP describes conditions concerning the sponsor's approved change, salary and occupation eligibility, the sponsor's status and the family permits' remaining validity. Ask whether your household meets the current requirements before assuming a hold can be used.
A dependant living abroad, an upcoming school trip or a permit close to expiry can affect the practical plan. Maintain a separate action list for each person rather than describe the household as one visa.
Coordinate the lawful work start
Agree a realistic joining date with the future employer. A signed offer is not the same as issued permission to perform duties. Ask what approval must be available before work starts and how the immigration status will be handled during processing.
Do not begin productive work on visitor status while waiting for the employer to complete paperwork. Equally, do not assume an active work permit associated with the previous employer authorises duties for the new company.
Professional licensing may require its own transfer, registration or approval. If the role is regulated, include that authority in the schedule rather than discover the requirement after the employment start date.
Keep settlement and cancellation evidence clear
Review final salary, accrued entitlements and any proposed settlement document under the applicable employment framework. Do not sign an acknowledgement that money was received if that statement is inaccurate. Ask the relevant employment authority how to address a disputed settlement without neglecting immigration responsibilities.
The cancellation of a work permit and the cancellation of residence can be separate administrative outcomes. Obtain copies of each action that applies to your case. Keep correspondence showing who was instructed to complete the remaining step.
If the employer becomes unresponsive, do not wait solely for an internal HR reply as a deadline approaches. Contact the employment authority about the permit problem and ICP about the residence record.
Allow for delays and returned applications
Create a schedule with document owners, submission dates and official references. Include passport validity, insurance and any requested qualification documents. The new employer should know immediately if a missing item could delay approval.
A pending application should not be treated as an automatic extension of lawful stay. Confirm your category-specific deadline after cancellation or expiry and ask what options apply if processing cannot finish in time.
Before travel during the transition, verify the active permission and whether departure affects pending applications. Do not assume the old residence can still be used for re-entry after it has been cancelled.
Confirm the completed transition
After issuance, inspect the new employment approval and residence record where applicable. Check names, passport information, category, employer and validity. Then confirm what happened to dependant permits and any hold arrangement.
Update the practical records that depend on your employer or residence information, including insurance and relevant service accounts. Retain the previous cancellation and new approvals together. The transition is complete when the actual official records match the intended arrangement, not merely when you begin receiving salary from a different company.
