How to Check Whether a Document Requires Legal Translation

Ask the authority receiving your document whether it needs legal translation, in which language and by whom.

Ask the authority receiving your document whether it needs legal translation, in which language and by whom. The answer depends on the particular procedure, not simply on whether the document originated outside the UAE.

Frame the question around a real transaction

Begin with the document, its language and the service where you intend to submit it. A useful enquiry identifies all three: a marriage certificate in a named language for a family-residence request, or a contract in English for a specified notarial service.

An abstract question about whether Abu Dhabi requires Arabic can produce a misleading answer. Local and federal procedures differ, and even one authority can offer services with different language arrangements. The recipient's current checklist is the starting point, followed by clarification where the wording is uncertain.

Read the exact language used

Look for phrases such as Arabic translation, certified translation, legal translation or an accepted English original. These terms describe different requirements from a convenience translation prepared only so you can understand the contents. Ask the authority to clarify an undefined certification requirement.

Save the service instructions you relied on, including their date. If an employee gives an answer that appears inconsistent with the published checklist, seek written clarification through the official channel. This is especially useful where a document will pass through more than one organisation before reaching its final recipient.

Distinguish translation from attestation

Translation addresses language. Attestation concerns the authenticity of signatures and seals. A record may require both, one, or another assessment as well. The presence of an attestation does not establish that the recipient can use the document in its original language.

Conversely, an Arabic translation does not authenticate the foreign original. When a checklist uses several terms, ask what each step is meant to achieve and in what order it should occur. The foreign-document translation guide explains how to prepare the source and check the finished text.

Identify recognised translator requirements

Where legal translation is required, check the appropriate official translator listing and the accepted language pair. The Ministry of Justice provides a Search for Translators service. Verify the individual or office details and ask who will certify the final work.

Do not assume that a translation company abroad, a notarised translator's declaration or an automated translation meets the particular UAE procedure. Those may serve other purposes, but acceptance must be confirmed. For uncommon languages or multi-stage translation, obtain explicit guidance before commissioning several versions.

Check Abu Dhabi's English-language exception

ADJD's English Notary Services Bureau provides specified notarial services in English and states that it accepts English documents and attachments without Arabic translation for that service. That is an important exception to advice claiming all notarial paperwork must be translated.

Its scope must remain clear. The fact that this bureau can handle a document in English does not change every court's filing requirements or another authority's rules. Ask whether your transaction can use that channel and whether the final recipient imposes a further language requirement afterwards.

Check the requirements of each stage

A document can move through the issuing country's authority, a UAE mission, MoFA and the ultimate UAE recipient. Their language requirements may not be identical. MoFA's courier-based checklist refers to an Arabic or English original, or a legally certified translation, but another recipient can require a particular accepted language.

List each stage before paying. Ask whether the translation needs to include subsequent attestations or whether another certified version will be required later. This can prevent commissioning an incomplete translation too early and paying again once the official record changes.

Apply the answer to the actual file

Once the requirement is clear, confirm which version will be translated. Use the corrected final original, complete with the relevant pages and attachments. An earlier version can have different names, dates or wording from the record ultimately submitted.

Tell the translator how the document will be used and check identity details against your passport. If a source discrepancy exists, ask how to present it accurately rather than instructing the translator to hide it. The aim is a faithful, accepted document, not a superficially matching set of words.

Record the decision and avoid unnecessary purchases

Keep a private note showing the recipient, the confirmed language requirement, the translator chosen where needed and the final submitted version. If no translation is required, retain the instruction establishing that rather than purchasing one because a commercial provider insists it is universal.

If a later recipient rejects the document, obtain the precise reason before arranging more work. It might need an authorised translation, a missing attachment, authentication of the original or proof linking names. Identifying the actual defect is more useful than treating every document problem as a translation problem.

Ask about attachments expressly rather than treating them as an afterthought. A contract's schedule, a reverse-side endorsement or an attached court direction can affect its meaning. If the recipient requests a complete translation, omitting those pages may leave the package incomplete even when the main page is accurate. Establish the scope before agreeing a page-based quotation and keep the translator's document inventory.
