A sponsoring company's closure creates an urgent need to review employment and residence records, but it does not establish a single automatic immigration outcome for every worker. Determine whether the company merely stopped trading, is being formally liquidated or has already cancelled permits. Then identify who is authorised to complete the outstanding transactions.
Your employment claim, work-permit status and residence file may require separate action. An inaccessible office does not mean official records have been closed correctly. Equally, an unexpired residence document should not be treated as a guarantee that no cancellation has occurred.
Establish what closure means in this case
Ask for the company's legal name, licence details and any official notice identifying a liquidator or authorised representative. A manager's message that the business has shut can be useful evidence, but it does not explain every administrative consequence.
Check whether employees are being transferred to another legal entity or whether employment is ending. A new shop sign or replacement owner does not by itself establish a lawful transfer of your employment or sponsorship.
Retain the contract, work-permit details, recent wage evidence and messages about the shutdown. Save personal copies while company email remains accessible. Do not remove confidential company records unrelated to your own employment just because you are gathering evidence.
Verify the immigration record independently
For an Abu Dhabi file, check the residence position with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP). Establish whether the permit is active, cancelled or expired and ask about the applicable deadline for your category.
Do not calculate immigration grace from the day the office doors closed. The recorded permit event and category determine the relevant assessment. If the sponsor cannot act, explain that problem directly rather than submit a standard application that assumes the company's cooperation.
ICP's cancellation service recognises exceptional cancellation circumstances, including disputes or a guarantor's death. That is an authorised route to enquire about, not a guarantee that any particular closure automatically qualifies without evidence.
Contact the appropriate employment authority
Workers within the MoHRE system should ask the ministry how to address the work permit and any unpaid entitlements where the employer is unavailable. Ministerial Resolution No. 47 of 2022 includes administrative cancellation procedures within its scope and requires the worker's residence status to be adjusted in accordance with the applicable period.
The details of your file matter. Ask what proof of closure, failed contact or dispute is needed and whether an authorised representative can act. A labour complaint may be necessary, but it should not be assumed to perform the immigration cancellation too.
If the employer belongs to a free zone or another separate employment framework, contact that authority. Do not use a mainland private-sector checklist without establishing jurisdiction.
Handle outstanding money carefully
Prepare a schedule of salary, benefits and other amounts you believe remain unpaid, supported by the contract and payment records. Ask the competent authority about the available claim process. A company liquidation may involve deadlines and a representative responsible for creditor claims.
Do not sign a statement confirming full payment if the amount has not been received. If a form is required to progress cancellation while money is disputed, seek the authority's instructions on recording the dispute accurately.
The immigration problem and the money claim should both be pursued. Waiting indefinitely for final settlement can allow the permitted-stay deadline to pass, while leaving without retaining employment evidence can make a later claim harder to explain.
Family sponsorship needs its own plan
If your residence supports family permits, tell ICP about those dependants before proceeding. Review each permit, the person's location and the intended next residence route. A spouse overseas and a child approaching renewal may need different practical arrangements.
ICP permits a conditional hold arrangement in some sponsor changes, but it is not an automatic benefit of company closure. If you do not yet have an approved new employer or meet the current conditions, ask which alternative applies.
Do not assume relatives retain residence indefinitely because they are not employees of the closing company. Their residence relationship may depend on yours even though they have separate records.
Moving to a new employer
A new job can offer a potential route forward, but the future employer must use the appropriate work-permit process. Explain the unresolved old file early so the new employer can identify required cancellations or approvals.
Do not pay an intermediary who promises to make the former sponsor disappear from government records without an official process. Request transaction references and verify decisions through the authority concerned.
The employer-change guide covers the coordination needed once a legitimate new arrangement is available.
What to finish first
Prioritise the earliest verified deadline, establish the authorised contact for the company and obtain clear instructions from the employment and immigration authorities. Keep a log of enquiries and reference numbers so each department can understand what has already happened.
Your objective is a documented outcome: lawful new status or timely departure, completed permit actions and a properly recorded employment claim where needed. Company closure makes coordination harder, but it does not remove the need to resolve those separate records.
